Many of the reviews include allegations of harassment—one such review stipulates that MCM called “everyday, multiple times a day ‘in the attempt to collect a debt.’”—beration, threats and refusal to accept payments.

Additionally, the Better Business Bureau incluse  232 complaints that have been logged against Midland Credit Management over the past three years alone.

The company has faced two government actions in the last two years. On Nov. 27, 2018, Midland Credit Management entered into an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance/Assurance of Discontinuance with the State of Alaska, District of Columbia et al. This Assurance settled allegations that MCM used illegal tactics to collect unverified debts by failing to verify debt information and failing to correctly document the debts. MCM paid out $577,783 for debt relief and compensation to District of Columbia consumers, $25,000 to each state for restitution, and $6 million in penalty to the States.

On Sept. 8, 2020, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau filed a Complaint for Permanent Injunction and Other Relief against MCM for various violations, including engaging in unfair acts and practises. This action is still pending.
